Anagain

Also known as: AnaGain, Pea sprout extract, Pisum sativum extract

Overview

AnaGain is a proprietary natural extract derived from young pea sprouts (*Pisum sativum*), specifically designed to stimulate hair growth and reduce hair loss. It is rich in bioactive compounds that influence gene expression related to hair follicle growth and cycling. Primarily used as an ingredient in dietary supplements and topical formulations, AnaGain aims to promote the transition of hair follicles from the resting (telogen) phase to the active growth (anagen) phase. While research is still emerging, clinical trials have indicated its potential efficacy in improving hair density and reducing hair shedding in individuals with mild to moderate hair loss. The extract is generally well-tolerated, with no significant adverse effects reported in studies to date.

Benefits

AnaGain primarily benefits individuals experiencing mild to moderate hair loss by promoting hair regrowth and reducing shedding. A controlled study involving 21 participants showed that daily intake of 100 mg AnaGain for 8 weeks significantly reduced hair loss and improved scalp condition. Another study, using a combination product including AnaGain, reported a 42% reduction in hair fall after 60 days and an improved anagen to telogen hair ratio from 4:3 to 4:1 (p < 0.05). This suggests a shift towards more active hair growth. Secondary benefits include improved scalp health markers such as reduced roughness, scaliness, redness, dryness, and itchiness. These benefits were observed within 1-2 months of consistent daily supplementation or topical application. The evidence quality is moderate, based on independent randomized controlled trials, though large-scale meta-analyses specifically on AnaGain are currently limited.

How it works

AnaGain exerts its effects by modulating gene expression within hair follicles. It specifically upregulates genes involved in hair growth stimulation and follicle development, such as fibroblast growth factors. This genetic modulation promotes the transition of hair follicles from the telogen (resting) phase to the anagen (growth) phase, thereby increasing hair density and reducing hair shedding. The bioactive compounds present in pea sprouts are believed to interact with specific signaling pathways that regulate the hair follicle cycle. While detailed absorption and bioavailability data are limited, clinical studies suggest that oral supplementation is effective in delivering these compounds to exert their beneficial effects on hair growth.

Side effects

AnaGain is generally well-tolerated, with no significant adverse effects reported in the available clinical studies. No severe side effects (defined as >5% incidence) or documented drug interactions have been observed in independent trials. There are no known contraindications for its use. However, data regarding its safety in special populations such as pregnant or lactating women, or children, are currently lacking. While studies have not reported toxicity at tested doses, the absence of long-term safety data beyond 8 weeks means that the full safety profile for extended use is not yet established. Users should consult a healthcare professional if they have pre-existing conditions or are taking other medications.

Dosage

The effective dosage of AnaGain observed in clinical trials is 100 mg taken orally once daily for a duration of 8 weeks. This dosage has been shown to reduce hair loss and improve scalp condition. While AnaGain is also used in topical formulations, specific isolated dosing data for topical application are sparse, as it is often combined with other ingredients. There is no established maximum safe dose, and studies have not reported toxicity at the tested dosages. For optimal results, daily administration appears necessary to maintain its beneficial effects on hair growth and reduction of hair shedding. It is advisable to follow the manufacturer's recommendations for specific products containing AnaGain.

FAQs

Is AnaGain safe for long-term use?

Current studies up to 8 weeks show good safety and tolerability. However, longer-term studies are needed to fully establish its safety profile for extended use.

How soon can results be expected?

Improvements in hair growth and a reduction in hair loss have been observed within 1-2 months of consistent daily supplementation or topical application.

Does it work alone or only in combination?

Some studies demonstrate benefits with AnaGain used alone orally, while others show efficacy when it's combined with other ingredients in topical formulations. Both approaches have shown positive results.

Is it effective for all types of hair loss?

The current evidence primarily supports its effectiveness for mild to moderate hair loss. Its effects on severe alopecia or other specific types of hair loss are not yet well-studied.

Research Sources

  • https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC8246764/ – This pilot randomized controlled trial investigated the effects of 100 mg/day AnaGain in 21 healthy adults with mild to moderate hair loss over 8 weeks. It found that AnaGain significantly reduced hair loss, improved scalp condition, and modulated hair follicle gene expression. The study suggests promising efficacy but is limited by its small sample size and lack of a placebo control.
  • https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1111/jocd.16084 – This study evaluated the safety and efficacy of REGENDIL™, a product containing AnaGain and other botanical ingredients, in adults with hair loss over 60 days. It reported an increased anagen:telogen ratio (from 4:3 to 4:1) and a 42% reduction in hair fall, alongside an improved hair growth rate. The study's limitation is that it used a combination product, so the effects cannot be solely attributed to AnaGain.
  • https://jcadonline.com/a-randomized-placebo-controlled-clinical-study-evaluating-a-dietary-supplement-for-hair-growth/ – This randomized placebo-controlled study evaluated a multi-ingredient dietary supplement, which included botanical ingredients, for hair growth over 6 months. It reported increased hair density and positive self-assessment without adverse reactions. While relevant to hair growth supplements, it does not provide isolated data on AnaGain, making it difficult to attribute specific effects to this ingredient.
