Natural sources of globulins include colostrum, dairy products, egg whites, and blood-derived products. While globulins show promise as prognostic markers, high-quality randomized controlled trials (RCTs) demonstrating direct therapeutic benefits from supplementation are lacking. How it works

Globulins function through several key pathways. Immunoglobulins, particularly IgG, mediate humoral immunity through opsonization and complement activation. α₂-globulins, such as haptoglobin, bind free hemoglobin as part of the acute-phase response. β-globulins, like transferrin, regulate iron homeostasis by facilitating iron transport. The bioavailability of globulins varies depending on the form of administration. Oral absorption of IgG is limited (less than 10%) without protease inhibitors. In contrast, intravenous (IV) or intramuscular (IM) administration of purified γ-globulin preparations results in 100% bioavailability, making it a more effective route for clinical applications.

Side effects

Oral globulin supplementation may cause gastrointestinal distress, including bloating and diarrhea, with an incidence rate of 5-15%. Allergic reactions are rare (less than 1%) with non-blood-derived products. However, certain contraindications exist. Individuals with IgA deficiency face a risk of anaphylaxis with blood-derived products. High-dose intravenous immunoglobulin (IVIG) should be avoided in hyperviscosity syndromes.
