Overview

Activated charcoal is effective as a gastrointestinal decontaminant when used shortly after ingestion of certain toxins. It is capable of adsorbing harmful substances, thus preventing their absorption into the bloodstream. However, it’s effectiveness for other uses such as detoxification is not supported by strong scientific evidence. Using activated charcoal as a toothpaste has not been extensively studied.
