Nutraflora Fos

Also known as: Fructo-oligosaccharides, NutraFlora®, Fructans, short-chain fructooligosaccharides (scFOS), Fructooligosaccharides (FOS)

Overview

Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) are non-digestible oligosaccharides composed primarily of fructose units, commonly found in a range of plants such as onions, garlic, and asparagus. They serve as prebiotics, promoting the growth of beneficial gut bacteria and enhancing bowel function. FOS are not absorbed in the upper gastrointestinal tract, allowing them to reach the colon intact, where they are fermented by gut bacteria, leading to the production of beneficial short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs). Research on FOS is robust, with numerous systematic reviews and clinical trials affirming their effects on gut health and overall wellness. They are available in various forms, including powders and capsules, utilized widely for their health benefits.

Benefits

FOS offers numerous health benefits, supported by evidence from clinical studies: 1) **Promotion of Beneficial Bacteria**: A study showed that 8 g/day of FOS significantly boosts *Bifidobacterium* and *Lactobacillus*, crucial probiotics for gut health. 2) **Improvement in Gut Health**: FOS reduces harmful bacteria and enhances SCFA production, which improves bowel function. 3) **Immune System Enhancement**: Doses as low as 4 g/day can increase serum IgA levels, promoting immune response. 4) **Obesity-Related Effects**: FOS can improve obesity markers significantly in combinations with probiotics. Infants and adults particularly benefit from FOS without severe adverse effects.

How it works

FOS are fermented by gut bacteria in the colon, leading to the generation of SCFAs like acetate, propionate, and butyrate. These SCFAs provide energy to colonic cells, lower colonic pH, and promote a favorable microbiota composition. This fermentation process enhances the immune function by boosting IgA production and influences gene expression and cellular metabolism through interactions with certain receptors and enzymes in the gut.

Side effects

FOS are generally safe and recognized as such by the FDA. However, common side effects (>5%) include abdominal discomfort and flatulence, particularly at elevated doses. Uncommon side effects (1-5%) such as vomiting have been reported mainly in infants. Rare side effects (<1%) are not documented. While there are no known significant drug interactions, individuals with severe gastrointestinal conditions should seek advice from a healthcare provider prior to use. Pregnant or breastfeeding women are advised to consult healthcare providers for safety.

Dosage

The effective minimum dose of FOS is around 4 g/day, with an optimal range of 4-10 g/day for improved gut health and immune function. Higher doses can lead to gastrointestinal side effects. The maximum tolerated dose has not been strictly defined, but animal studies have shown toleration at doses up to 9,000 mg/kg, and humans have tolerated 12 g/day well. FOS can be taken anytime but are recommended with meals to lessen side effects, and they are available in powders, capsules, and fortified foods.

FAQs

Is FOS safe to consume?
