Organic chamomile flower extract

Also known as: Matricaria chamomilla, Chamomile, German chamomile, Organic Chamomile Flower Extract, Matricaria recutita

Overview

Organic Chamomile Flower Extract is derived from the dried flowers of the chamomile plant, primarily Matricaria recutita, cultivated organically to avoid synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. It contains bioactive compounds such as flavonoids (e.g., apigenin), terpenoids, and polyphenols. Traditionally used for anxiety, sleep disorders, digestive issues, anti-inflammatory purposes, and skin conditions, it exhibits mild sedative, anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antimicrobial properties. Research on chamomile is moderate, with several randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and systematic reviews supporting its use for anxiety and sleep quality, though some outcomes require further large-scale studies.

Benefits

Chamomile extract has demonstrated several evidence-based benefits. For Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD), a 2019 meta-analysis of 12 RCTs found significant improvement in GAD symptoms after 2-4 weeks (mean difference ~ -1.4 to -1.8, p < 0.01), though effects on state anxiety were not significant. It also significantly improved sleep quality (SMD = -0.73, p < 0.005), with a 2020 review confirming its efficacy for sleep disturbances. Secondary benefits include anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and antispasmodic effects, making it beneficial for skin conditions, gastrointestinal disorders, and potentially osteoarthritis and ulcerative colitis. Chamomile polyphenols may also help regulate blood sugar by inhibiting carbohydrate-digesting enzymes. These benefits are mainly observed in adults with anxiety or sleep complaints, with moderate effect sizes for GAD and sleep quality.

How it works

Chamomile's anxiolytic and mild sedative effects are primarily due to its flavonoid apigenin, which binds to benzodiazepine receptors in the central nervous system. Its anti-inflammatory actions are mediated by inhibiting cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase pathways. Antioxidant polyphenols scavenge free radicals, contributing to its protective effects. Chamomile interacts with the central nervous system for its calming effects, the gastrointestinal tract for antispasmodic and antimicrobial benefits, and the skin for anti-inflammatory and wound healing properties. Molecular targets include GABA-A receptor modulation and inhibition of inflammatory enzymes. Additionally, chamomile polyphenols can inhibit carbohydrate-digesting enzymes like α-amylase and α-glucosidase, suggesting metabolic benefits. Apigenin glycosides are absorbed and metabolized, with bioavailability potentially moderate due to the need for hydrolysis.

Side effects

Chamomile is generally safe and well-tolerated in clinical trials. Common side effects, occurring in over 5% of users, are mild gastrointestinal discomfort and rare allergic reactions. Uncommon side effects (1-5%) include skin irritation, particularly with topical use in sensitive individuals. Rare side effects (less than 1%) are hypersensitivity reactions, especially in those with allergies to plants in the Asteraceae family (e.g., ragweed, daisies). Chamomile may interact with anticoagulants due to mild blood-thinning properties and with sedatives due to its CNS depressant effects; caution is advised when combining. It is contraindicated in individuals with known allergies to chamomile or related plants. Data on its safety in pregnancy and children are limited, so caution is recommended for these populations.

Dosage

For anxiety and sleep benefits, optimal dosage ranges from approximately 400-1100 mg/day of chamomile extract. Clinical trials have used doses between 220 mg and 1100 mg daily, often standardized to apigenin content. The maximum safe dose is not well established, but doses up to 1100 mg/day have been well tolerated in trials. Benefits on anxiety and sleep typically appear after 2-4 weeks of consistent use. Dosing is often divided throughout the day or taken before bedtime for sleep support. Extracts standardized to flavonoid content are preferred for consistent efficacy. Taking chamomile with meals may improve absorption, as its glycosides require enzymatic hydrolysis. No specific cofactors are identified as required for its efficacy.

FAQs

Is organic chamomile more effective than non-organic?

No direct comparative studies exist. Organic status primarily ensures purity and absence of pesticides, not necessarily superior efficacy compared to non-organic chamomile.

How soon will I see results?

Improvements in anxiety and sleep quality are typically observed within 2 to 4 weeks of consistent daily supplementation.

Is it safe to combine with other medications?

Caution is advised when combining chamomile with sedatives or blood thinners due to potential interactions. Always consult a healthcare provider before combining.

Can it cause allergies?

Yes, chamomile can cause allergic reactions, especially in individuals allergic to plants in the Asteraceae family, such as ragweed or daisies.

Research Sources

  • https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/31006899/ – This systematic review and meta-analysis of 12 RCTs found that chamomile significantly improved Generalized Anxiety Disorder (GAD) symptoms and sleep quality. However, it did not show a significant effect on state anxiety. The study highlights chamomile's potential for chronic anxiety and sleep disturbances but notes heterogeneity in measures.
  • https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC5074766/ – This systematic review comprehensively details chamomile's diverse therapeutic properties, including antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and antimicrobial effects. It suggests benefits in various conditions like gastrointestinal disorders and skin issues, though it emphasizes the need for more large-scale clinical trials to confirm these effects.
  • https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-018-23736-1 – This experimental study, using in vitro and animal models, investigated the effects of chamomile polyphenols. It found that these compounds inhibit carbohydrate-digesting enzymes, suggesting a potential role for chamomile in regulating blood sugar levels. This research provides mechanistic insight but requires human clinical trials for validation.
  • https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1155/2020/3792390 – This systematic review specifically focused on chamomile's efficacy and safety for sleep disturbances. It concluded that chamomile is effective and safe for improving sleep quality, supporting its traditional use as a mild sedative. The review contributes to the evidence base for chamomile's role in sleep management.
